Repairing Leadwork in Manchester

Expert Lead Repairs by DM Roofing: A Crucial Component for Your Roofing System

Leadwork is a crucial component of any roofing system, as it provides a watertight seal between your roof and any adjoining brickwork, such as a chimney stack. There are various methods for installing lead soakers and flashings, which depend on the type of tile or slate used on your roof.

Importance of Leadwork in Roofing

Lead is a popular choice for roofing materials due to its durability and malleability. Lead soakers and flashings provide a watertight seal around any penetrations in your roof, such as a chimney stack or roof windows. Without leadwork, your roof would be prone to water damage, which could lead to structural issues and costly repairs.

Secret Soakers for Slate and Plain Tiles

Secret soakers are commonly used with slate and plain tiles measuring 10″ x 6″. These sit on top of the slate or tile by 3″ (length varies) and extend 3″ up the chimney. They are not visible once the next slate or tile is laid on the course above. Segmental or cockney flashings are then installed, folded, dressed, and chased into the mortar joints of the walled abutment to provide a watertight seal.

Visible Soakers for Flat Tiles

Visible soakers are used on flat tiles, such as the Marley Modern type. These soakers are usually around 450mm long and sit 150mm onto each individual tile, with a 75mm upstand against the wall. Like secret soakers, visible soakers are then flashed with segmental or cockney flashings, folded, dressed, and chased into the mortar joints of the walled abutment.

Profiled Tiles

Profiled tiles are typically soaked and flashed in one piece or longer lengths of approximately 1.2 meters, using 300mm lead folded 150mm x 150mm. The lead is temporarily sat in place and marked on the brickwork mortar joints. Once marked, it is cut, folded, and chased into the mortar joint. Once secured in place, it can then be lead dressed around the profiled tiles and tile head lap.
